Mỗi người đều có rất nhiều mối quan hệ nhưng không phải ai cũng có nhiều bạn, đặc biệt một tình bạn thật sự thì lại càng hãn hữu và có vẻ như ngày càng có ít người xây dựng được điều đó. Để có được một tình bạn gần gũi và lâu dài, những người bạn cần phải có những phẩm chất đặc biệt.

Phẩm chất thứ nhất là không vị kỉ. Một người mà chỉ quan tâm đến mỗi sở thích và cảm giác của chính mình thì không thể làm bạn tốt được. Tình bạn phải xuất phát từ cả hai phía; tình bạn sẽ tồn tại mãi khi người ta cho đi và nhận lại, và sẽ chẳng có thứ tình bạn mà chỉ có một phía cho đi tất cả và phía còn lại thì nhận tất cả.

Sự vững vàng là phẩm chất thứ hai. Nhiều người có vẻ như không kiên định chút nào cả. Họ theo một sở thích với lòng nhiệt tình nhưng sau đó lại nhanh chóng cảm thấy nhàm chán và bị cuốn hút bởi một vài sự việc mới khác. Những người hay thay đổi và thiếu vững vàng sẽ không thể duy trì một tình bạn lâu đai được.

Trung thành là phẩm chất thứ ba. Hai người bạn cần phải trung thành với nhau, và họ cần hiểu thật rõ về nhau để không xảy ra nghi ngờ.
