Theo Liên minh Hợp tác xã Việt Nam, hiện cả nước có hơn 19.500 hợp tác xã. Trong đó có hơn 10.000 hợp tác xã nông nghiệp và hơn 9.000 hợp tác xã phi nông nghiệp. Đã tạo công ăn việc làm cho hơn 15 triệu người ( Theo báo cáo tổng kết NQTW5 – Liên Minh HTX Việt Nam năm 2012).
Kinh tế hợp tác xã có vai trò rất quan trọng trong nền kinh tế của Việt Nam vì hợp tác xã thường gắn với một cộng đồng dân cư nhất định. Lợi ích kinh tế hợp tác xã đưa lại là điều kiện tạo sự ổn định và gắn kết giữa các cá nhân trong cộng đồng. Thông qua hợp tác xã, các thành viên có thể cùng nhau giải quyết các vấn đề trong cuộc sống như thăm hỏi, động viên, giúp đỡ nhau những lúc ốm đau, khó khăn, hoạn nạn…Kinh tế tập thể trong nông nghiệp, nông thôn có vị trí rất quan trọng trong quá trình thực hiện công nghiệp hoá, hiện đại hoá nông nghiệp, nông thôn. Tuy nhiên, trong quá trình hoạt động sản xuất kinh doanh các hợp tác xã nông nghiệp luôn gặp những rủi ro gây tổn thất nặng nề cho hợp tác xã. Rủi ro xuất phát từ chính môi trường nội tại của hợp tác xã như rủi ro về tài chính, rủi ro sản xuất, rủi ro từ nguồn nhân lực…Hay rủi ro xuất phát từ môi trường bên ngoài của hợp tác xã nông nghiệp như: rủi ro từ phía đối tác kinh doanh, rủi ro thông tin, rủi ro từ môi trường tự nhiên, kinh tế, chính trị - pháp luật, công nghệ…việc tìm ra những nguyên nhân gây ra rủi ro là hết sức cần thiết, nó giúp hợp tác xã nông nghiệp nhận dạng được những rủi ro có thể xảy ra trong quá trình hoạt động của mình, chủ động có phương án phòng ngừa, khắc phục tổn thất do rủi ro gây ra.
 Nâng cao trình độ cán bộ, người lao động trong hợp tác xã : Đối với cán bộ lãnh đạo các hợp tác xã như chủ nhiệm, phó chủ nhiệm, kế toán trưởng, ban kiểm soát: cần tích cực tham gia các lớp tập huấn, bồi dưỡng kiến thức do các phòng khuyến nông, sở nông nghiệp và Liên minh hợp tác xã Việt Nam tổ chức. Đối với người lao động trong hợp tác xã: Hợp tác xã nông nghiệp cần thường xuyên tự tổ chức các lớp tập huấn về an toàn lao động, kỹ thuật sản xuất kinh doanh, cách sử dụng máy móc, các lớp kỹ năng… nhằm nâng cao kiến thức cho người lao động của hợp tác xã nông nghiệp
 Hợp tác xã cần phải nâng cao vai trò và hiệu quả hoạt động của ban quản trị hợp tác xã
 Tích cực thực hiện giao dịch hàng hóa, dịch vụ qua hợp đồng, mở rộn thị trường tiêu thụ các sản phẩm
 Dành kinh phí nâng cấp cơ sở hạ tầng, trang thiết bị phục vụ quá trình sản xuất – kinh doanh của hợp tác xã
 Thành lập quỹ dự phòng rủi ro
 Tích cực tham gia bảo hiểm nông nghiệp, nhằm tránh được các rủi ro xảy ra
Trên đây, là một vài nét của Hợp tác xã Viêt Nam cũng như một số giải pháp nhằm nâng cao hiệu quả hoạt động sản xuất của Hợp tác xã Việt Nam trong điều kiện hiện nay.
