Lặn là môn được xem là môn thể thao dưới nước tiêu biểu nhất mặc dù nó không có những cuộc thi. Những người lặn có thể xem mình là những nhà khoa học, nhà nhiếp ảnh hoặc chỉ là người thích lặn chứ không phải vận động viên thể thao. Những người lặn có thể lặn rất sâu dưới nước trong thời gian dài vì họ tự mang theo nguồn cung cấp ô-xy. Thùng chứa khí ô-xy của họ được gọi là thiết bị thở dưới nước độc lập, viết tắt theo tiếng Anh là SCUBA.
