Trường tập trung đào tạo trong các lĩnh vực ngành công nghệ kỹ thuật cao như công nghệ nano, công nghệ vật liệu mới, cơ khí và tự động hoá...
Về nghiên cứu khoa học, trường hướng tới các sản phẩm hoàn chỉnh qua đó làm tăng tỷ trọng giá trị sản phânm công nghệ cao trong sản xuất công nghiệp, các lĩnh vực khoa học liên ngành như biến đổi khí hậu, phòng tránh thiên tai.
Trường đại học việt nhật có tổ chức theo mô hình đại học tiên tiến của nhật bản với ngôn ngữ chính là tiếng nhật, tiếng anh và tiếng việt với sự tham gia trự tiếp của các nhà khoa học, chuyên gia, doanh nhân nhật bản tại việt nam.
