Kỹ năng nghe hiểu trong tiếng Anh, những khó khăn và biện pháp khắc phục

(ĐHVH) - Ngày nay, tiếng Anh là thứ tiếng thông dụng được sử dụng rộng rãi nhất trên thế giới. Đó là ngôn ngữ của khoa học kỹ thuật, công nghệ, thương mại và thông tin trên toàn cầu. Tiếng Anh đã trở thành môn học bắt buộc trong hầu hết các trường học ở Việt Nam, đặc biệt là trong trường đại học. Trên thực tế, trong quá trình học tiếng Anh, sinh viên gặp phải rất nhiều khó khăn và khó khăn phổ biến nhất là những khó khăn trong quá trình học kỹ năng nghe hiểu. Trong phạm vi bài viết này, chúng tôi xin đề cập những khó khăn khi nghe nhìn từ quan điểm người học, đồng thời tìm ra nguyên nhân của chúng để từ đó đưa ra một số biện pháp khắc phục nhằm giúp người học vượt qua khó khăn, đặc biệt trong giai đoạn đầu khi mới học nghe.

1. Định nghĩa về nghe hiểu

Định nghĩa về nghe hiểu được các nhà khoa học đưa ra theo các cách khác nhau.

Theo Field (1998:38) thì ‘Nghe là một quá trình trí tuệ không nhìn thấy được, do đó rất khó mô tả. Người nghe phải phân biệt được các âm, hiểu được từ vựng và cấu trúc ngữ pháp, nắm được trọng âm và ý định của người nói, có thể nhớ lại và hiểu được nó trong ngữ cảnh văn hóa-xã hội của phát ngôn.’

Anderson & Lynch (1988: 21) đưa ra định nghĩa về nghe hiểu như sau:

‘Nghe hiểu nghĩa là hiểu những gì mà người nói đã nói. Người nghe có vai trò đặc biệt quan trọng trong quá trình nghe bằng cách vận dụng kiến thức đa dạng của mình phân tích những gì anh ta nghe được để có thể hiểu phát ngôn của người nói.’

Wolvin & Coakley (1985) định nghĩa nghe theo cách đơn giản hơn: ‘Nghe là quá trình cơ quan thính giác tiếp nhận, xử lý và xác định được thông điệp của lời nói.’

Định nghĩa về nghe hiểu, theo Văn Tân và Nguyễn Văn Đạm (1997) trong ‘Từ điển tiếng Việt’ được đưa ra cụ thể như sau: ‘Nghe là một quá trình trong đó thính giác tiếp nhận những âm thanh bên ngoài và chuyển nó đến hệ thống thần kinh trung ương. Tại đây, những âm thanh này được phân tích, chuyển thành những tín hiệu và được truyền đến các giác quan giúp hình thành những phản xạ của con người đối với những âm thanh đó.’

Các định nghĩa trên cho thấy nghe hiểu là một kỹ năng giải quyết vấn đề (problem-solving) phức tạp. Nhiệm vụ của nghe hiểu không chỉ là tiếp nhận âm thanh mà nó còn đòi hỏi sự phân tích và xác định được thông điệp của lời nói.

2. Những khó khăn thường gặp trong quá trình học kỹ năng Nghe

Thông thường, con người luôn nghe với một mục đích nhất định. Nếu mục đích của nghe chỉ để thư giãn, giải trí nhằm giải tỏa căng thẳng như nghe nhạc chẳng hạn thì người nghe hầu như không cần phải có bất kỳ một kỹ năng nào cả. Tuy nhiên, nếu mục đích nghe là để thu nhận thông tin, đặc biệt là khi nghe băng, đĩa ngoại ngữ để học tiếng thì người học cần phải có một số kỹ năng như: phán đoán trước khi nghe, tập trung trong khi nghe, suy ra thông tin chính cần nghe từ những từ ngữ quan trọng trong bài (key words), phân tích, tổng hợp những thông tin nghe được. Kỹ năng nghe được tạo thành từ một loạt các kỹ năng riêng lẻ đó.

Đa số người học đều có nhận định rằng một văn bản nếu ở dạng viết có thể đơn giản đối với họ trong xử lý thông tin, nhưng cũng văn bản đó ở dạng nói thì người học lại gặp rất nhiều khó khăn trong việc nắm bắt nội dung chính của bài. Tại sao lại như vậy? Dưới đây là quan điểm của một số tác giả khi đưa ra những khó khăn mà người học thường gặp phải trong quá trình học kỹ năng nghe.

2.1. Quan điểm của một số tác giả về những khó khăn khi nghe.

Theo Ur, P. (1996), tác giả của nhiều cuốn sách viết về việc dạy tiếng (language teaching) thì người học thường gặp phải những khó khăn sau đây trong khi học nghe: (1) Không nhận ra được các âm mà người Anh nói, (2) Có thói quen phải hiểu tất cả các từ trong câu mới hiểu được nội dung của bài, (3) Không thể hiểu được khi người Anh nói nhanh một cách tự nhiên, (4) Cần phải nghe nhiều lần mới có thể hiểu được, (5) Thấy khó có thể nắm bắt được tất cả các thông tin và không dự đoán được điều mà người nói sắp nói, (6) Nếu phải nghe kéo dài, người học sẽ cảm thấy mệt mỏi và thiếu tập trung.

Khi đề cập đến những khó khăn của người học đối với môn nghe, hai nhà giáo học pháp ngoại ngữ là Nguyễn Bàng và Nguyễn Bá Ngọc cũng liệt kê ra 6 khó khăn sau đây: (1) Gặp khó khăn với các âm tiếng Anh, (2) Phải hiểu hết các từ, (3) Không hiểu được khi người Anh nói nhanh tự nhiên, (4) Thấy khó có thể theo kịp tốc độ nói của người Anh, (5) Cần nghe đi nghe lại nhiều lần, (6) Mệt mỏi và thất vọng.

Trong cuốn ‘Teaching Listening’, Underwood (1989) cũng đưa ra một số khó khăn của người học nghe. Đó là: (1) Không theo kịp được tốc độ của người nói, (2) Không thể nhắc lại được thông tin, (3) Hạn chế về vốn từ vựng, (4) Không nhớ hết tất cả các thông tin nghe được, (5) Không nắm bắt được thông tin chính, (6) Không thể tập trung và (7) Không hình thành được thói quen nghe.

Những khó khăn trong quá trình học kỹ năng nghe nhìn từ quan điểm của người học cũng được các tác giả Hoàng Văn Vân, Nguyễn Thị Chi và Hoàng Thị Xuân Hoa (2006) nêu ra trong cuốn ‘Đổi mới phương pháp dạy tiếng Anh ở Trung học Phổ thông Việt Nam’ như sau: (1) Khó khăn về nghe âm tiếng Anh, (2) Phải hiểu được tất cả các từ mới nắm bắt được ý định của người nói, (3) Không hiểu được người bản ngữ khi họ nói nhanh tự nhiên, (4) Cần phải nghe đi nghe lại nhiều lần, (5) Thấy khó nắm bắt được tất cả các thông tin và không dự đoán được thông tin tiếp theo, (6) Không tập trung khi nghe.

Nói tóm lại, theo nhận định của các nhà khoa học kể trên thì người học thường gặp phải những khó khăn phổ biến sau đây trong khi nghe: (1) Không nhận ra các âm tiếng Anh, (2) Hạn chế về vốn từ vựng, (3) Thiếu tập trung khi nghe, (4) Khó có thể nắm bắt ý chính của bài nghe, (5) Cần nghe nhiều lần và (6) Không theo kịp tốc độ của người nói.

2.2. Một số khó khăn phổ biến của sinh viên không chuyên khi học nghe

Bằng cách liệt kê ra những khó khăn của người học đối với môn nghe theo quan điểm của các nhà khoa học trình bày ở trên, chúng tôi đã xây dựng nên những câu hỏi điều tra nhằm thu thập thông tin thực tế phục vụ cho quá trình nghiên cứu tìm ra những khó khăn mà sinh viên không chuyên thường gặp phải trong quá trình học kỹ năng nghe.

Trên thực tế, theo kết quả khảo sát gần 80 sinh viên năm thứ hai theo học khoa Văn hóa Du lịch trường Đại học Văn hóa Hà Nội thì có ba khó khăn phổ biến nhất trong việc học nghe là: (1) Không nhận ra các âm tiếng Anh (49%), (2) Thiếu tập trung khi nghe (57%), (3) Khó có thể nắm bắt ý chính của bài nghe (71%).

3. Nguyên nhân của những khó khăn khi nghe

3.1. Nguyên nhân của việc không nhận ra các âm tiếng Anh

Khi được hỏi về nguyên nhân của việc gặp khó khăn với các âm trong tiếng Anh, 31% số người tham gia điều tra cho rằng khó khăn này là do họ không phân biệt được các từ đồng âm, đặc biệt là các từ có cách phát âm gần giống nhau. 28% số sinh viên được hỏi nhận định việc nhầm lẫn giữa dạng khẳng định và dạng phủ định là nguyên nhân chủ yếu. Đặc biệt là 40% số sinh viên tham gia điều tra cho rằng họ không nhận ra thông tin chính cần nghe là do một vài đặc điểm trong phát âm chuỗi lời nói (connected speech) trong tiếng Anh như: hiện tượng nuốt âm (elision), dạng yếu trong phát âm một số từ chức năng (weak form), hiện tượng đồng hóa âm vị (assimilation), hiện tượng rút gọn của từ (contraction), hiện tượng nối âm (linking),.... Như vậy, việc người học không nhận ra các âm trong tiếng Anh chủ yếu là do (1) không phân biệt được các từ đồng âm và các từ có cách phát âm gần giống nhau, (2) nhầm lẫn giữa dạng khẳng định và dạng phủ định, đặc biệt là do (3) một số ảnh hưởng về phát âm chuỗi lời nói trong tiếng Anh.

3.2. Nguyên nhân của việc thiếu tập trung khi nghe

Số liệu thu được từ cuộc điều tra cho thấy 30% số sinh viên cho rằng nguyên nhân của việc thiếu tập trung khi nghe là do sức khỏe không tốt trong khi số lượng sinh viên nhiều hơn (37%) coi việc thiếu kinh nghiệm khi nghe là nguyên nhân làm cho họ càng lúc càng cảm thấy khó tập trung vào bài nghe. Trong khi đó 32% số sinh viên tham gia điều tra nghĩ rằng khả năng kém tập trung của họ vào bài nghe là do cả hai nguyên nhân trên. Từ những số liệu này có thể kết luận rằng người nghe thường mất khả năng tập trung nghe khi (1) tình trạng sức khỏe không tốt và (2) thiếu kinh nghiệm trong nghe hiểu.
