Về lý luận cần làm rõ và phân biệt khái niệm tăng trưởng về chất (hay chiều sâu) và tăng trưởng về lượng (hay về chiều rộng).
Trong phân tích và so sánh kinh tế vĩ mô với các nước, tăng trưởng kinh tế được đo bằng GDP bình quân đầu người là một chỉ số rất quan trọng và chịu ảnh hưởng của sự gia tăng dân số. Tốc độ gia tăng GDP bình quân đầu người sẽ bằng tốc độ tăng trưởng GDP trừ đi tốc độ gia tăng dân số.
Có một thực tế, mặc dù kinh tế tăng trưởng thậm chí là sự tăng trưởng về chất như một tín hiệu tích cực của sự phát triển nhưng không có nghĩa là mức sống của người dân đã được nâng lên một cách tương ứng.
