Socrates đã nghiên cứu nhiều lĩnh vực tri thức khác nhau, như nhận thức, chính trị, giáo dục học, nhưng ông tập trung nhất vào đạo đức học. Ông đặt ra nhiệm vụ cho triết học là phải dạy người ta sống một cuộc sống lương thiện. Vì biết về điều mình không biết, là tiền đề của tri thức: cái dốt nát được ta nhận thức sẽ kích thích tìm tòi, suy nghĩ, nghiên cứu, học hỏi...và tìm ra tri thức. Nói cách khác, cái dốt được nhận thức là động lực đi tìm tri thức.
