Tại Việt nam, trường hợp nhiễm HIV đầu tiên được phát hiện 12/1990 tại TP Hồ Chí Minh và bùng nổ bắt đầu từ năm 1993 từ nhóm nghiện chích ma túy.Đến 12/1998 toàn bộ 61 tỉnh thành đều phát hiện người nhiễm HIV. Tính đến hết năm 2012 cả nước có 210.703 người nhiễm HIV hiện còn sống, số bệnh nhân AIDS hiện còn sống là 61.699 và 63.372 người tử vong do AIDS, tỷ lệ nhiễm HIV toàn quốc là 239 người trên 100.000 dân
