Như vậy, các lĩnh vực hoạt động ưu tiên nhằm bảo tồn loài rùa quý hiếm nhất trên thế giới tại Việt Nam – rùa Hoàn Kiếm bao gồm: Thứ nhất, giảm thiểu các nguyên nhân gây tử vong cho rùa nhằm xác định được các mối đe dọa và biện pháp giảm tỷ lệ tử vong của rùa tại khu vực hồ Hoàn Kiếm và hồ Đồng Mô. Thứ hai, bảo vệ, quản lý và phục hồi nơi sinh sống của chúng tốt hơn, trong khi đó vẫn đảm bảo cho cộng đồng địa phương không bị tác động bất lợi về kinh tế do các hoạt động bảo vệ sự sống còn của loài rùa này ở Việt Nam. Thứ ba, tăng cường sự hiểu biết về sinh học, sinh thái học và các quần thể rùa nước ngọt thông qua nghiên cứu, giám sát, trao đổi thông tin. Thứ tư, nâng cao nhận thức cộng đồng và giáo dục về những mối đe dọa đối với rùa Hoàn Kiếm và nơi sinh sống của chúng, đẩy mạnh sự tham gia của cộng đồng vào các hoạt động bảo tồn tại địa phương. Cuối cùng, thúc đẩy hợp tác, trao đổi kinh nghiệm trong lĩnh vực bảo tồn rùa nước ngọt nhằm hỗ trợ năng lực thực hiện các cam kết khu vực và quốc tế.
Rùa Hoàn Kiếm và rùa Trung Bộ đều thuộc Chương trình nghiên cứu và bảo vệ của Chương trình Bảo tồn rùa châu Á (ATP). ATP đã và đang tiến hành nghiên cứu, khảo sát nhằm tìm kiếm các cá thể loài còn lại ngoài tự nhiên và môi trường sống phù hợp cho việc bảo tồn chúng; tổ chức các hoạt động nâng cao nhận thức cộng đồng và nỗ lực kêu gọi, hợp tác với chính quyền và cơ quan bảo tồn của các địa phương. Chương trình đang tiến hành xác định xem có cá thể rùa Hoàn Kiếm ở hồ Đồng Mô nữa hay không, nhằm tiến hành ghép đôi sinh sản với hy vọng duy trì nòi giống "cụ rùa."
Chương trình bảo tồn rùa châu Á tin tưởng các loài động vật hoang dã nói chung và các loài rùa cạn và nước ngọt nói riêng ở Việt Nam sẽ được bảo vệ tốt hơn trong tương lai khi ngày càng nhiều thế hệ trẻ được đào tạo về công tác bảo tồn. Các học viên đến với khóa học mỗi năm do ATP tổ chức đều có hiểu biết về bảo tồn và khả năng ngoại ngữ tốt hơn. Họ mong đợi và tin tưởng những học viên trẻ có năng lực và kỹ năng tốt sẽ trở thành những nhà lãnh đạo tương lai trong lĩnh vực bảo tồn động vật hoang dã tại Việt Nam.
