Nền giáo dục này là một sự tiếp nối của giáo dục thời Việt Nam Dân chủ Cộng hòa và thừa hưởng một phần di sản của giáo dục Việt Nam Cộng hòa. Khi hai miền Nam và Bắc thống nhất năm 1976 thì khuôn mẫu giáo dục ở miền Bắc tiếp cận với hệ thống giáo dục đã được thiết lập ở miền Nam; cụ thể nhất là học trình 10 năm tiểu học và trung học ở miền Bắc phải phù hợp với học trình 12 năm ở trong Nam.
