Nhìn chung các nghiên cứu trước đây tại Việt Nam và nước ngoài, tác giả thấy rằng các nghiên cứu trước chỉ khảo sát, nhận định tổng quát thực trạng ứng dụng hệ thống thông tin kế toán tại các doanh nghiệp, mà chưa phân tích chuyên sâu đến sự phù hợp giữa yêu cầu thông tin kế toán của người sử dụng và khả năng đáp ứng các nhu cầu thông tin của hệ thống thông tin kế toán, cũng như tác động của sự phù hợp này tới hiệu quả hoạt động kinh doanh của các DNNVVN. Nghiên cứu này sẽ lấp đầy khoảng trống bằng cách khám phá sự hòa hợp giữa nhu cầu và khả năng xử lý thông tin kế toán, và kiểm tra tác động của nó đến hiệu quả hoạt động kinh doanh của DNNVV tại Tp.HCM. Cuộc khảo sát 224 doanh nghiệp nhỏ và vừa tại thành phố Hồ Chí Minh đã thu thập trên 19 biến nhu cầu và 19 biến khả năng đáp ứng để có thể so sánh, đồng thời dữ liệu cũng thu thập trên hiệu quả hoạt động của các doanh nghiệp.
