Vào lúc đầu khi học tiếng Anh, chúng ta đã được dạy rằng từ vựng rất quan trọng vì nó truyền tải quan điểm, tư tưởng của bạn, là nền tảng giúp chúng ta học tốt ngữ pháp. Sở hữu lượng từ vựng phong phú, bạn diễn đạt được nhiều điều hơn, còn nếu chỉ giỏi nguyên ngữ pháp thì vế sau chưa chắc đã đúng. Có một số ý kiến cho rằng "Chẳng cần học quá nhiều từ khi chúng ta có thể cho qua bằng cách nào đó nếu không hiểu chính xác nghĩa của từ đó". Và cũng có ý kiến cho rằng "Chúng ta cần học thật nhiều từ mới. Từ vựng thì rất quan trọng trong việc thể hiện bản thân mình tốt".
Cả hai ý kiến trên đều có những mặt tích cực và tiêu cực của nó. Như tôi đã nói trên, từ vựng là nền tảng cho việc học ngữ pháp, nếu không biết ngữ pháp thì rất ít thông tin được diễn đạt, nhưng nếu không biết từ vựng thì không thông tin nào được diễn đạt. Có thể đôi lúc chúng ta không cần phải biết rõ từng từ trong một câu mới hiểu được ý nghĩa của câu đó nhưng bạn sẽ không hiểu được sâu xa câu đó nói gì. Thay vào đó, nếu bạn biết rõ nghĩa của từng từ thì việc dịch một cách chi tiết sẽ dễ dàng hơn với bạn. Từ vựng rất quan trọng nhưng ngữ pháp cũng quan trọng không kém, để học tốt môn ngoại ngữ thì việc học ngữ pháp và từ vựng phải luôn kết hợp với nhau. Nếu bạn chỉ học từ vựng mà không để tâm đến ngữ pháp thì sẽ gây nên thiếu sót khiến chúng ta không thể học tốt tiếng Anh được. Vì vậy chúng ta cần nâng cao tinh thần học ngữ pháp và từ vựng, đặc biệt là trong việc học từ mới, mở rộng vốn từ.
Đối với tôi, việc học từ vựng chiếm phần lớn trong thời quá trình học của tôi. Theo tôi, việc biết thật nhiều từ vựng sẽ nâng cao khả năng nhạy bén trong việc nghe, đọc và nói tiếng Anh. Nhưng cũng không vì vậy mà tôi lại "bỏ rơi" ngữ pháp. Việc cải thiện cả từ vựng cả ngữ pháp sẽ giúp chúng ta dần dần học tốt tiếng Anh.
