Trong năm mới có phong tục đốt pháo để đuổi ma quỷ và những điều xui xẻo. Người ta thường mua cành đào để nhà vì cho rằng cây đào nở hoa tượng trưng cho “tài lộc”. Trong năm mới, trẻ em và người già thường được mừng tuổi, gọi là “lì xì”, tiền đựng trong bao đỏ để lấy may. Người dân Trung Quốc thường trang trí nhà bằng cách treo những câu đối đỏ, đèn lồng đỏ dán giấy đỏ và đốt pháo để mong muốn có một cái Tết vui vẻ, một năm mới an lành.

Tết đón năm mới của các bộ tộc Lào là Bunpimay. Trong những ngày Tết, mọi người gặp nhau vui vẻ chúc Tết bằng cách buộc những sợi chỉ bằng bông hay len có màu trắng, xanh, hồng vào cổ tay nhau biểu tượng cho sự may mắn và sức khỏe.
