Giữa các dân tộc, chúng ta không thể tự hào là nền văn hoá của ta đồ sộ, có những cống hiến lớn lao cho nhân loại, hay có những đặc sắc nổi bật. Ở một số dân tộc hoặc là một tôn giáo, hoặc là một trường phái triết học, một ngành khoa học, một nền âm nhạc, hội hoạ... phát triển rất cao ảnh hưởng phổ biến và lâu dài đến toàn bộ văn hoá thành đặc sắc văn hoá của dân tộc đó. Ở ta thần thoại không phong phú - hay là có nhưng một thời gian nào đó đã mất hứng thú lưu truyền? Tôn giáo hay triết học cũng đều không phát triển. Người Việt Nam không có tâm lý kiền thành, cuồng tín tôn giáo, mà cũng không say mê tranh biện triết học. Các tôn giáo đều có mặt, nhưng thường là biến thành một lối thờ cúng, ít ai quan tâm đến giáo lí. Không có một ngành khoa học, kĩ thuật, giả khoa học nào phát triển đến thành có truyền thống. Âm nhạc, hội họa, kiến trúc đều không phát triển đến tuyệt kĩ. Trong các ngành nghệ thuật, cái phát triển nhất là thơ ca. Hầu như người nào cũng có thể, cũng có dịp làm dăm ba câu thơ. Nhưng số nhà thơ để lại nhiều tác phẩm thì lại không có. Xã hội có trọng văn chương, nhưng cũng chưa bao giờ tôn ai là thi bá, và bản thân các nhà thơ cũng không ai nghĩ cuộc đời, sự nghiệp của mình là ở thi ca. Chưa bao giờ trong lịch sử dân tộc, một ngành văn hoá nào đó trở thành đài danh dự, thu hút, quy tụ cả nền văn hoá.
