Theo thống kê của Bộ Văn hóa - Thể thao và Du lịch, mỗi người dân Việt Nam đọc chỉ 0,8 bản sách/năm trong khi bình quân một người Pháp đọc 15 quyển sách/năm; người Mỹ đọc 12 quyển/năm hay gần hơn là Malaysia, theo số liệu thống kê năm 2012, mỗi người dân nước này đọc từ 10-20 quyển sách/năm… Một cuộc thăm dò của Báo Lao động gần đây, loại sách đang được người Việt đọc nhiều nhất là... truyện tranh (60%), kế đến là truyện ngắn (50%), truyện dịch (35%), tiểu thuyết trong nước (30%) và thơ (20%)!
