Chiến tranh-hiện tượng xã hội-chính trị được thể hiện chủ yếu bằng cuộc đọ sức bằng vũ trang hoặc chính trị giữa các bên trong một nước hoặc giữa các nước (hay liên minh các nước), nhằm đạt tới mục đích kinh tế, chính trị nhất định,....là sản phẩm của xã hội có giai cấp đối kháng. Mỗi một cuộc chiến tranh đều mang lại hậu quả khôn lường và tất cả hậu quả đó đều trút lên người dân nhỏ bé, xét về bản chất chiến tranh có hai loại: chiến tranh chính nghĩa và chiến tranh phi nghĩa. Tùy theo tình hình cụ thể, chiến tranh có những tên gọi khác nhau, như chiến tranh nhân dân, chiến tranh du kích, chiến tranh giải phóng, chiến tranh đế quốc,…hay ngày nay nó còn có những cuộc chiến tranh như chiến tranh lạnh, chiến tranh thương mại, chiến tranh ngoại giao,….
