Có một số sinh viên trong đoặn văn miêu tả về mẹ đã viết ‘She never doesn’t do anything’ để nói người mẹ của họ rất chịu thương chịu khó. Trong khi đó câu trên có thể được biết một cách đỡ phức tạp hơn là ‘She is very hard working’ hay ‘She never stops working’.
Chính việc dịch từng từ tiếng Việt sang tiếng Anh đã làm cho câu văn rườm rà, khó hiểu và đôi khi gây buồn cười. Chúng ta hãy xem một vài ví dụ sau:
Ví dụ: 1. My mother has a white skin

Câu trên nên viết lại là ‘My mother has a fair complexion’.

2. She always brings a smile on her lips

Để diễn đạt ý này, ta sẽ viết câu như sau: She always wears a smile on her face.

3. Although my grandfather is old, but he is still strong.

Ta chỉ có thể được dùng hoặc từ ‘although’ hoặc từ ‘but’ trong câu này mà không được kết hợp cả hai từ theo lối tư duy tiếng Việt ‘mặc dù...nhưng’.
