Theo Từ điển Bách khoa Triết học của Liên Xô thì từ "truyền thống" (bắt nguồn từ tiếng Latinh là Traditio - có nghĩa là sự chuyển giao, lưu truyền lại), được hiểu là các yếu tố của di sản văn hóa và xã hội được chuyển từ thế hệ này sang thế hệ khác và được bảo tồn, gìn giữ lâu dài trong các xã hội, giai cấp hay nhóm xã hội nhất định.Truyền thống là những tập tục, thói quên và nói chung là những kinh nghiệm xã hội được hình thành từ lâu đời trong lối sống và nếp nghĩ của con người, được truyền lại từ thế hệ này sang thế hệ khác. Truyền thống có trong nhiều khía cạnh của cuộc sống,như là : tư tưởng (yêu nước, hiếu học, cần cù, hiếu khách...) , văn hóa (hát ca trù, múa chèo, múa rối nước, hát xẩm...) ,nghành nghề, món ăn,...
