Ý thức được sự phức tạp của vấn đề, giáo sư Phillip V.Lewis từ trường Đại học Abilene Christian, Hoa Kỳ đã tiến hành điều tra và thu thập được 185 định nghĩa được đưa ra trong các sách giáo khoa và các bài nghiên cứu từ năm 1961 đến 1981 để tìm ra “đạo đức kinh doanh” được định nghĩa ra sao trong các tài liệu nghiên cứu và trong ý thức của các nhà kinh doanh. Sau khi tìm ra những điểm chung củacác khái niệm trên,ông tổng hợp lại và đưa ra khái niệm về đạo dức kinh doanh như sau:“ Đạo đức kinh doanh là tất cả những quy tắc, tiêu chuẩn, chuẩn mực đạo đức hoặc luật lệ để cung cấp chỉ dẫn về hành vi ứng xử chuẩn mực và sự trung thực (của một tổ chức) trong những trường hợp nhất định”.
