Năm 1997 là năm đánh dấu mạng lưới Internet chính thức được cài đặt ở Việt Nam thông qua giáo sư Rob Hurle đến từ Đại học ANU (The Autstralian National University). Trong một cuộc phỏng vấn ở Việt Nam vài năm trước, vị giáo sư này cho biết điều này bắt nguồn "từ những suy nghĩ tưởng như rất ngớ ngẩn". Theo lời của giáo sư vào cuối những năm 1980, ông đã có dịp được tiếp xúc với một số du học sinh Việt Nam theo học tại trường Đại học Quốc gia Úc và thực tế khi những du học sinh này về nước, họ không còn cơ hội được tiếp cận với những chiếc máy tính có dung lượng lớn nữa. Năm 1991, khi sang Việt Nam du lịch cùng vợ, Rob đã mang theo một chiếc modern cũng như phác thảo một hình thức truy cập hệ thống máy tính ở Úc qua điện thoại và modern. Tuy chi phí quá lớn khiến kế hoạch của ông không thành công nhưng không vì thế mà làm cho Rob Hurle bỏ cuộc, ông liên tục tìm kiếm những đối tác mới và không ngừng cải thiện kế hoạch của mình. Không lâu sau, với sự hợp tác của nhiều cá nhân và cơ quan trong nước, Việt Nam cuối cùng cũng đã hòa mạng Internet toàn cầu thành công.
