Với phương châm ngành thực phẩm làm nền tảng cho sự phát triển, trong những năm qua, Kinh Đô đã liên tục đầu tư đổi mới công nghệ hiện đại, thực hiện các chiến lược sáp nhập, liên doanh liên kết và hợp tác như mua lại nhà máy kem Wall từ tập đoàn Unilever, mua lại Tribeco, Vinabico, đầu tư vào Nutifood, Eximbank...
Đặc biệt năm 2010, Kinh Đô đã tiến hành việc sáp nhập Công ty CBTP Kinh Đô Miền Bắc (NKD) và Công ty Ki Do vào Công ty Cổ Phần Kinh Đô (KDC). Định hướng của Kinh Đô là thông qua công cụ M&A, sẽ mở rộng quy mô ngành hàng thực phẩm với tham vọng là sẽ trở thành một tập đoàn thực phẩm có quy mô hàng đầu không chỉ ở Việt Nam mà còn có vị thế trong khu vực Đông Nam Á.
Song song đó, với việc định hướng phát triển để trở thành một tập đoàn đa ngành, Kinh Đô cũng mở rộng sang nhiều lĩnh vực khác như đầu tư kinh doanh bất động sản, tài chính và phát triển hệ thống bán lẻ. Theo đó, các lĩnh vực có mối tương quan hỗ trợ cho nhau, Công ty mẹ giữ vai trò chuyên về đầu tư tài chính, các công ty con hoạt động theo từng lĩnh vực với các ngành nghề cụ thể theo hướng phát triển chung của Tập Đoàn. Năm 2011, Kinh Đô liên kết công ty bánh kẹo Ezaki Glico Co. Ltd đến từ Nhật Bản.Năm 2012 Kinh Đô đã thông qua phương án sáp nhập Công ty Cổ phần Bánh kẹo Vinabico theo phương thức hoán đổi cổ phiếu. Tỉ lệ hoán đổi cổ phiếu là 2.2:1, tức 2.2 cổ phiếu Vinabico đổi lấy 1 cổ phiếu KDC. Sau khi sáp nhập, Vinabico sẽ thành Công ty Trách nhiệm Hữu hạn Một thành viên do KDC sở hữu 100% vốn điều lệ.
II. Các ngành nghề kinh doanh
Không chỉ tập trung vào ngành Thực phẩm với mục tiêu trở thành Tập đoàn Thực phẩm hàng đầu Việt Nam, công ty cổ phần Kinh Đô còn hướng đến xây dựng một tập đoàn hoạt động đa ngành: thực phẩm, địa ốc, tài chính, bán lẻ.
 Ngành Thực Phẩm là lĩnh vực hoạt động chính và là nền tảng cho sự phát triển của
Kinh Đô. Hàng năm, doanh thu ngành thực phẩm đóng góp hơn 90% doanh số toàn Tập Đoàn. Các sản phẩm của Kinh Đô là những sản phẩm phù hợp, tiện dụng bao gồm các loại thực phẩm thông dụng, thiết yếu, các sản phẩm bổ sung và đồ uống.  Ngành Bán Lẻ thể hiện hướng phát triển mới của Kinh Đô. Hiện tại, Kinh Đô đang xây dựng chuỗi Kinh Đô Bakery và mô hình K-Do Bakery & Café mới. Trong thời gian tới, Kinh Đô tập trung vào xây dựng và quản lý chuỗi cửa hàng, siêu thị, chuỗi cửa hàng tiện lợi, các trung tâm thương mại và shopping center... Các điểm bán lẻ được ưu tiên đặt ở các vị trí trung tâm hoặc tiện lợi nhằm tận dụng tốc độ tăng trưởng ở các khu vực có mật độ dân cư phát triển nhanh và các đô thị mới.
