Mỗi năm ước tính cả nước có khoảng 500.000 ca tử vong. 75% trong số này là do các bệnh không lây nhiễm, chủ yếu liên quan tim mạch, phổi mãn tính, đái tháo đường... "Hầu hết bệnh không lây nhiễm không thể chữa khỏi, khi đã mắc thì mang suốt đời nhưng có thể dự phòng",
Tại hội thảo mới đây về phòng chống bệnh không lây nhiễm diễn ra ở Hà Nội, bác sĩ Socorro Escalante, đại diện Tổ chức Y tế Thế giới cho rằng Việt Nam đã đạt được thành tựu về sức khỏe tốt hơn so với nhiều nước có trình độ tương đương, thuộc nhóm có chỉ số sức khỏe tốt… Tuy nhiên, sự gia tăng bệnh không lây nhiễm là mối đe dọa có thể hủy hoại các thành tựu này. Vì thế, chiến lược phòng chống bệnh không lây nhiễm là một cải cách y tế quan trọng.

Bệnh không lây nhiễm là nạn dịch của tương lai đang xảy ra trong hiện tại ở Việt Nam, chiếm 71% gánh nặng bệnh tật và là nguyên nhân của 3/4 số ca tử vong - cao hơn mức bình quân trên toàn cầu. Đây là một điểm rất quan trọng khiến bệnh không lây nhiễm thực sự là vấn đề y tế công cộng tại Việt Nam.

Các bệnh không lây nhiễm là nguyên nhân hàng đầu gây tử vong, tàn tật và là nguyên nhân chính dẫn đến tình trạng quá tải tại các bệnh viện. Nó gây thiệt hại, ảnh hưởng lớn đến phát triển kinh tế, xã hội của đất nước do bệnh phải điều trị suốt đời làm tăng chi phí y tế, giảm năng suất lao động và sản phẩm xã hội, ảnh hưởng nặng nề tới sức khỏe cộng đồng.
