Hiện nay, Việt Nam có khoảng 40% dân số (trong tổng số hơn 86 triệu dân ) sống tại các vùng trung du miền núi, những người có cuộc sống gắn bó trực tiếp với rừng. Rừng không chỉ cung cấp lương thực, gỗ, củi cho họ, bên cạnh đó rừng còn đóng vai trò là chỗ dựa tâm linh, cuộc sống tinh thần của cộng đồng. Trải qua nhiều thế hệ người dân đã tạo dựng được hiểu biết, mối quan hệ và tính tương hỗ 2 chiều với rừng. Ngày nay, càng có nhiều quan điểm ủng hộ vai trò của cộng đồng trong quản lý và bảo vệ rừng.
