Theo số liệu thống kê của Bệnh viện Tâm thần TP.HCM, trong năm 2011 có 25.000 lượt trẻ trong độ tuổi đi học (từ 3 - 15 tuổi) đến khám và điều trị. Năm 2012 con số này là 28.000, năm 2013 có hơn 32.000 và từ đầu năm 2014 số lượng bệnh nhân là học sinh đến khám tăng liên tục. Nguyên nhân chính dẫn đến tình trạng này là do trẻ học tập quá căng thẳng. Sợ thi trượt, sợ điểm kém, sợ không đáp ứng được mong muốn của bố mẹ, sợ bị bạn bè chê cười khi có vấn đề trong học tập thì các em thường âm thầm chịu đựng, giải quyết chứ không chia sẻ với người lớn, tìm được tiếng nói chung và sự sẻ chia đúng mức từ phía cha mẹ, từ đó các em ngày càng cảm thấy cô độc và dễ cảm thấy áp lực tinh thần hơn.
