Chùa Một Cột (Chùa Diên Hựu) đươc xây dựng năm 1049, là một trong những công trình kiến trúc tiêu biểu của kinh thành Thăng Long. Ngôi chùa có kiến trúc như khối vuông, mỗi chiều rộng 3m, như một đóa sen đặt trên 1 cột đá đường kính 1,25m giữa hồ Linh Chiểu hình vuông. Xung quanh hồ có lan can và hành lang tường có vẽ tranh. Theo sử sách, toàn bộ khu chùa được bao bọc bởi hồ tròn Liên Trì, bốn phía có cầu cong dẫn vào trung tâm và hai tòa bảo tháp phía trước. Bố cục chung được quy tụ về điểm trung tâm làm nổi bật trọng tâm của chùa với các nét cong mềm mại của mái, các đường thẳng khỏe khoắn của cột và nét gấp khúc của các con sơn trụ chống xung quanh cột, tạo nên sự hài hòa với những khoảng sáng tối ẩn hiện lung linh trong không gian yên ả.
