Một thống kê công bố mới đây của Ngân hàng Phát triển Châu Á (ADB) cho thấy xuất khẩu dầu thô của Việt Nam đạt mức đỉnh điểm là 19,5 triệu tấn vào năm 2004 trong khi sản lượng sản xuất cũng đạt mức kỷ lục là 20,05 triệu tấn.

Kể từ khi Nhà máy lọc dầu Dung Quất đi vào hoạt động năm 2009, xuất khẩu dầu thô của Việt Nam đã giảm đáng kể. Khối lượng dầu thô xuất khẩu từ năm 2010 đến nay chỉ dao động từ 8-9 triệu tấn trong khi lượng sản xuất cũng dao động từ 15-17 triệu tấn.Theo Tổng cục Hải quan, tính đến hết tháng 10/2015, Việt Nam đã xuất khẩu được 7,7 triệu tấn dầu thô, tương đương với mức của cùng kỳ năm trước.
