Truyền thông đại chúng được hiểu chung là một quá trình có định hướng nhằm truyền đạt thông tin đại chúng tới những đối tượng mục tiêu đại chúng bằng các phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng để phục vụ mục đích đã được đề ra.

Các phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng hay các phương tiện thông tin đại chúng là các phương tiện được sử dụng để truyền đạt thông tin một cách đại chúng, rộng rãi, tức là có khả năng đưa thông tin tới đối tượng đại chúng mục tiêu.

Ví dụ: báo in, tạp chí, phát thanh, truyền hình, sách, internet...

Cần phân biệt giữa nội dung truyền thông và phương tiện truyền thông. Theo đó phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng là một yếu tố trung gian có khả năng chứa đựng nội dung truyền thông đại chúng, chúng khác biệt với bản thân nội dung truyền thông đại chúng.

Ví dụ: phim hay video là nội dung truyền thông đại chúng, chúng chỉ có thể được hiểu là phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng nếu như chúng được gắn thêm ý nghĩa phương tiện: Phim truyền hình, video phát tán qua internet là các phương tiện truyền thông đại chúng.
