Các loại hình đào tạo đã được đa dạng hóa với các hệ đào tạo chính quy, tại chức, từ xa để đáp ứng nhu cầu ngày càng cao của người học cũng như của toàn xã hội. Hơn nữa ngày càng có nhiều sinh viên Việt Nam được gửi ra nước ngoài để học tập và học tập chuyên sâu.
Nội dung chương trình, phương pháp giảng dạy đã được cải tiến để cổ thể đào tạo ra những sinh viên cổ đủ trình độ đáp ứng được yêu cầu của nền kinh tế thị trường. Các trường dạy nghề dài hạn và ngắn hạn được mở cho các học sinh tốt nghiệp phổ thông chuẩn bị bước vào thị trường lao động.

Những vấn đề tồn tại trong nền giáo dục Việt Nam
Trang thiết bị phục vụ giảng dạy đã lỗi thời. Hiện nay, các thiết bị thuộc thế hệ trước năm 1960 còn chiếm tới 37% tổng số trang thiết bị có ở các trường đại học, cao đẳng. Còn ở các trường phổ thông, tình trạng xuống cấp về trường lớp còn tệ hại hơn. Việc lớp học ca 3, lớp học tạm bợ... phổ biến tại các địa phương.
Trình độ của đội ngũ giáo viên ở tất cả các cấp còn thấp, không đáp ứng nổi yêu cầu cao của sự phát triển kinh tế ngày nay. Giáo viên được trả lương thấp, dẫn đến tình trạng nhiều giáo viên bỏ nghề hoặc dạy thêm tràn lan vì mục đích kinh tế, làm cho nhà trường nói chung và thầy giáo nói riêng ngày càng giảm uy tín trước con mắt của mọi người,
Tình trạng phân cực về chất lượng giáo dục cũng là một vấn đề đáng lo ngại ở Việt Nam. Chính sách xã hội hóa giáo dục mặc dù đã tạo ra nhiều cơ hội giáo dục hơn cho người dân, nhưng có nguy cơ làm tăng thêm khoảng cách xã hội. Vấn nạn “bằng thật, kiến thức giả” hiện đang là một vấn đề nhức nhối ở Việt Nam.
Định mức chi cho giáo dục trên đầu người dân ở Việt Nam còn rất thấp so với các nước trong khu vực và trên thế giới, Trong thời gian tới nền giáo dục của Việt Nam không thể cất cánh nếu mức chi cho giáo dục trên đầu người không tăng.
Nguồn đầu tư ngân sách nhà nước (NSNN) cho giáo dục và đào tạo (GD&ĐT) không đáp ứng được nhu cầu, không thể bù đắp các chi phí phát sinh do số lượng học sinh tăng (bình quân hơn 1 triệu em/năm), do trượt giá... Trong khi đó, nhiều chuyên gia trong ngành giáo dục cho rằng, việc phân bổ ngân sách giáo dục theo quy mô dân số như hiện nay là chưa hợp lý đã ảnh hưởng không nhỏ đến chất lượng đào tạo.
Làm gì để khắc phục thực trạng này?
Theo một quan chức cao cấp của Bộ GD&ĐT, cần tăng cường các nguồn lực tài chính cho công tác GD&ĐT. Cụ thể tăng đầu tư NSNN cho giáo dục lên 20% đến năm 2005.
Đảng và nhà nước cần tập trung mọi cố gắng có thể, dành ưu tiên cao nhất cho phát triển giáo dục và đào tạo. Cần coi sự phát triển giáo dục và đào tạo trở thành quốc sách hàng đầu của chính phủ và sự nghiệp của toàn dân.
Từ nay đến năm 2005, cần phải hoàn thành xóa mù chữ trong toàn quốc và thực hiện phổ cập giáo dục tiểu học đúng độ tuổi ở hầu hết các địa phương, tiến tới cơ bản phổ cập giáo dục trung học cơ sở vào khoảng năm 2010.
Tóm lại, cần tiến hành sâu rộng xã hội hóa giáo dục bằng nhiều biện pháp đa dạng và phong phú. Đối với cơ chế quản lý ngân sách giáo dục, tăng cường hiệu quả đầu tư của đồng vốn còn ít ỏi.
