Trong Lộ trình xây dựng Cộng đồng ASEAN, Kế hoạch công tác về IAI có nội dung xuyên suốt và hỗ trợ cho cả 3 trụ cột: Chính trị - An ninh, Kinh tế và Văn hóa - Xã hội. Đến nay, ASEAN đang bước vào giai đoạn nước rút thực hiện Kế hoạch công tác về IAI giai đoạn II và chuẩn bị xây dựng Kế hoạch công tác về IAI giai đoạn III.

Nhìn lại quá trình thực hiện Kế hoạch công tác về IAI giai đoạn 2009-2015, các nước ghi nhận con số 360 dự án đã và đang được triển khai với ngân sách 47,8 triệu USD (tính đến tháng 4/2016), trong đó nhiều chương trình đào tạo kỹ năng chuyên môn, ngoại ngữ đã mang lại những kết quả thiết thực, giúp nâng cao năng lực cho CLMV trong tiến trình hội nhập khu vực.

Về phương hướng sắp tới, cuộc họp nhất trí tập trung thực hiện những biện pháp, hoạt động còn lại trong Kế hoạch công tác về IAI giai đoạn II, nhất là những biện pháp đáp ứng yêu cầu cấp bách của CLMV, đồng thời đẩy nhanh tiến độ xây dựng Kế hoạch công tác về IAI giai đoạn III để kịp trình thông qua tại Hội nghị Cấp cao ASEAN vào tháng 9/2016 tại Vientiane, Lào.

Từ kinh nghiệm thu được trong quá trình triển khai các Kế hoạch công tác trước và theo khuyến nghị của đơn vị tư vấn, các nước nhất trí Kế hoạch công tác mới sẽ tập trung vào 5 lĩnh vực ưu tiên chiến lược nêu trên. Đi đôi với việc xác định 5 trọng tâm chiến lược, trong Kế hoạch công tác mới này sẽ có thêm các biện pháp nhằm tăng cường cơ chế triển khai và giám sát thực thi, từ phân công phân nhiệm tới từng đầu mối, huy động nguồn lực tới việc củng cố cơ chế phối hợp (không chỉ trong ASEAN mà còn giữa ASEAN với Đối tác mà còn giữa các đối tác với nhau để tránh trùng lắp).
