Trong bài phân tích “thi cử và nền giáo dục Việt Nam dưới thời Pháp thuộc” của Trần Bích San, khi đô hộ Việt Nam, nhu cầu cấp bách là phải thay đổi hệ thống giáo dục cũ bằng một hệ thống mới phục vụ cho việc cai trị. Vì vậy ngay khi chiếm được ba tỉnh miền Đông Nam Kì năm 1862, Pháp đã lên kế hoạch tiêu diệt nền Nho học. Năm 1864 đánh dấu kì thi Hương cuối cùng ở Nam kì – một kì thi thuộc nền Nho học. Hòa ước năm 1874 công nhận chủ quyền của Pháp trên toàn lãnh thổ Nam Kì thì đến năm 1878 chữ Hán trong giấy tờ hành chánh đều được thay bằng chữ Pháp và chữ quốc ngữ.
