(1) Rà soát lập danh sách tất cả bệnh nhân tâm thần hiện đang sống tại nơi điều tra; (2) Đánh số thứ tự bệnh nhân tâm thần trong danh sách. Lấy ngẫu nhiên một trong hai nguời đầu tiên. Tiếp đó cứ cách 3 người tiếp theo trong danh sách lại chọn một người cho đến khi đủ cỡ mẫu 52 người.
