Bắc Ninh là một tỉnh thuộc vùng đồng bằng Sông Hồng, nằm trong tam giác kinh tế trọng điểm Hà Nội- Hải Phòng- Quảng Ninh và là cửa ngõ phía Đông Bắc của thủ đô Hà Nội. Tỉnh có địa giới hành chính tiếp giáp với các tỉnh: Bắc Giang ở phía Bắc, Hải Dương ở phía Đông Nam, Hưng Yên ở phía Nam và thủ đô Hà Nội ở phía Tây. Theo số liệu thống kê năm 2010 tỉnh Bắc Ninh có diện tích tự nhiên 823km2 với tổng dân số 1.038.229 người.
Vùng đất trù phú nơi đây khi xưa vốn là “xứ Kinh Bắc”, nổi tiếng với nhiều làng nghề và các lễ hội dân gian phong phú diễn ra hàng năm. Vào năm 1822, xứ Kinh Bắc được Nhà Nguyễn đổi tên thành tỉnh Bắc Ninh. Đến tháng 10.1962, theo Nghị quyết của Quốc hội Nước Việt Nam Dân chủ Cộng hòa, tỉnh Bắc Ninh sáp nhập với tỉnh Bắc Giang thành tỉnh Hà Bắc. Từ đó “Bắc Ninh” chỉ còn là tên của một đơn vị hành chính trong tỉnh Hà Bắc và có tên gọi là Thị xã Bắc Ninh. Sau đó, đến ngày 6.11.1996, Quốc hội nước Cộng hòa xã hội chủ nghĩa Việt Nam khóa 9 kỳ họp thứ 10 đã ra Nghị quyết tái lập tỉnh Bắc Ninh.

Tỉnh đang từng bước đưa chăn nuôi trở thành một ngành chính tạo nguồn nguyên liệu cho phát triển công nghiệp chế biến nông sản, góp phần làm thay đổi diện mạo nông thôn theo hướng hiện đại hóa.
