Điều dễ nhận thấy là sinh viên không chuyên năm thứ nhất thường diễn đạt ý tưởng trong bài viết tiếng Anh theo lối tư duy tiếng Việt vì vốn từ ngữ hạn chế và hơn nữa, họ chưa có đủ kiến thức về văn hóa Anh. Do đó điều hiển nhiên xảy ra là họ sẽ dịch từng từ chứ không phải là việc sử dụng những cấu trúc câu tiếng Anh trong bài viết. Điều này làm cho bài viết dài dòng, không mạch lạc và đôi khi làm cho người đọc hiểu sai ý tưởng của người viết.
