Mục đích của phương pháp này là kiểm tra xem các mục hỏi nào thực sự đóng góp vào việc đo lường các khái niệm lý thuyết mà ta đang nghiên cứu. Những mục hỏi cùng đo lường một khái niệm tiềm ẩn thì phải có mối tương quan với các mục còn lại trong nhóm/nhân tố.
Hệ số Cronbach’s Alpha là phép kiểm định thống kê mức độ chặc chẽ mà các mục hỏi
trong thang đo tương quan với nhau.

Trên cơ sở đó, các biến có hệ số tương quan với tổng (item-total correlation) thấp hơn sẽ bị loại và tiêu chuẩn để lựa chọn thang đo là khi nó đảm bảo độ tin cậy Alpha từ 0.6 trở lên.
Thông thường, thang đo có Cronbach alpha từ 0.7 đến 0.8 là sử dụng được. Nhiều nhà nghiên cứu cho rằng khi thang đo có độ tin cậy từ 0.8 trở lên đến gần 1 là thang đo lường tốt. Tuy nhiên, trong trường hợp khái niệm đo lượng là mới hoặc mới đối với người trả lời trong bối cảnh đang nghiên cứu thì hệ số Cronbach’s Alpha được chấp nhận từ mức 0.6 trở lên (Nunnally, 1978; Peterson, 1994; Slater, 1995).
