- Lãnh đạo cấp cao hai nước duy trì thường xuyên các chuyến thăm và tiếp xúc tại các diễn đàn quốc tế và khu vực.
- Một số cơ chế đối thoại giữa hai nước:
+ Tháng 5/2007, hai bên thành lập Ủy ban Hợp tác Việt-Nhật do hai Bộ trưởng Ngoại giao làm đồng Chủ tịch (đã họp 5 phiên).
+ Đối thoại Đối tác chiến lược Việt Nam-Nhật Bản về ngoại giao-an ninh-quốc phòng cấp Thứ trưởng ngoại giao từ năm 2010 (đã họp 4 phiên).
+ Đối thoại chính sách quốc phòng Việt-Nhật cấp Thứ trưởng từ tháng 11/2012 (đã họp 2 phiên).
+ Đối thoại An ninh cấp Thứ trưởng (đã họp phiên đầu tiên tháng 11/2013).
+ Đối thoại chính trị định kỳ ở cấp Thứ trưởng Ngoại giao (từ năm 1993).

-Senior leaders of both countries to maintain frequent visits and exposure in the international and regional forums.-A number of mechanisms for dialogue between the two countries:+ May 2007, the two sides formed the Committee of Vietnamese-Japanese cooperation by the two Foreign Ministers made co-chair (met 5 sessions).+ Strategic partners dialogue Vietnam-Japan diplomatic-security-level Defense Secretary since 2010 (4 meetings).+ Free defense policy dialogue-Japanese Vice Minister level since November, 2012 (met 2 sessions).+ Deputy Minister-level security dialogue (the first session were meeting in November 2013).+ Periodic political dialogue at the level of Deputy Foreign Minister (since 1993).
