20's:Very few before 1929.Most about broadway, music and singing. 30's: Popularity waned before Busby Berkeley, a choreographer, began working on movies. They became large spectacles. Comedies began including musical numbers, and stars of musicals became very popular.40's: Studios broke away from the formulas that worked before to make more original movies.50's: Very similar to 40's. In the late 50s's popularity begins to fade.60's: Some musicals were very popular, but rock and roll music made some movies seem too "wholesome." A few musicals flopped, including later classics. The popular films were basic dramas/comedies/romances, and the flops typically had another genre mixed in, like fantasy.
