Hai Van Pass – The Best Costal Road

Hai Van Pass – The Best Costal Road in the World?
Spend any time in Vietnam around other backpackers and you’ll realize buying a motorcycle or scooter to experience the magnificence of Vietnam is extremely popular. Vietnam of course has amazing landscapes; from desolate beach trails to winding mountainous roads. Of the latter, there is one particular trip that has left many riders speechless, and others calling the Hai Van pass “One of the best coast roads in the world.”.
What really skyrocketed the popularity of the Hai Van pass was an episode of the famous British television show Top Gear. The three loveable hosts of the show make their ridiculous trip throughout Vietnam as only they can, on ridiculous scooters and playing hilarious pranks, until they find themselves in awe of the Hai Van pass. But what exactly makes this costal road so magnificent?
Before getting to the Hai Van pass, you have to drive through the city of Da Nang. If you’re a beach bum then you probably haven’t gone into mainland Da Nang much, but nothing to fear, there is traffic but not as bad as you would find in Saigon or Hanoi. Once you get past busy streets you get to enjoy driving up the coast and experience Da Nang Bay. Although this part of the journey is beautiful in-of-itself, wait till you see it from the top!
Depending on the weather, you might not be able to see the mountain where the pass runs through until you are close enough to see through the fog. Imagine that, seeing the massive mountain peeking through the fog as you get nearer and nearer to literally the ride of a lifetime.
It’s close to impossible to try and describe the feeling of pretending you’re a professional motorcycle rider racing to the top of a curvy and amazing road. The best way to explain it is a mixture of adrenaline and serenity as you yank the throttle to get up the steep road while also enjoying the natural beauty of the sun bouncing off the calm and almost unending ocean below.
Although it may seem like all fun and games, there are several small shrines along the road that mark where there have been accidents and of course deaths. At times you might feel you are living and driving on the edge, and even though it is a safe place to ride nowadays, there is the eerie possibility of flying off the side of the mountain. To ensure you make it back to Glocal Beachside Hostel to share with others about the amazing ride while enjoying a cold beer on the rooftop bar, ALWAYS wear a helmet, be aware of your surroundings and other riders, and don’t take pictures on your phone and drive. There are plenty of places to stop and document your journey or to just reflect on your life moments that led you to this point and time.
Once at the top of the mountain, you can take pictures of the road you just conquered, as well as the other side of the mountain that will take you to Hue. If you are feeling even more adventurous, you can ride up a small road that takes you even higher up. Make sure your moto is powerful enough to make it up the steep path. If there is fog or lots of clouds, there isn’t much of a view, but it’s very cool to be amongst the clouds and watch them pass by your face. Even if you don’t plan to go to Hue, there is a small beach town called Lang Co at the bottom of the backside of the mountain that is worth stopping in and enjoying fresh seafood and relaxing before headed back to Glocal.
So what makes the pass one of the best in the world? Well you could watch the famous episode of Top Gear, look at thousands of pictures online, or you could rent a moto from Glocal Beachside Hostel, strap on your helmet, and find out for yourself!
