The study targeted either physicians or clinic managers who
were involved in ordering vaccines for their clinics. Invitation to
complete the survey was sent out to a list of 2984 randomly
selected physicians and clinic managers via e-mail. The source
list came from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). Invitations were sent to a random sample of pediatricians (N= 1485),
and dual internist-pediatricians (N= 1499). The eligibility of recipients on the invitation list was unknown, and individuals were
asked to reply only if they or their office manager routinely offered
influenza vaccines. We were unable to pre-screen invited practices
on their eligibility or willingness to participate. The disadvantage
is that the response rates with this sampling approach will appear
lower than in surveys with pre-selected panels of physician responders. The advantage of the approach is to allow wider entry of
unscreened participants into the sample and to increase representativeness. In order to improve response rates from the e-mail
invitations, we randomly selected 610 telephone numbers associated with the original e-mail addresses, and followed up with a
phone call to identify and invite individuals to participate in the
study.
