Việt Nam với những thành tựu đạt được sau 20 năm đổi mới có thể khằng định các doanh nghiệp trong nước đã lớn mạnh lên một bước căn bản. Số doanh nghiệp ngày một tăng, nếu tính đến cuối năm 2000 cả nước có 42.288 doanh nghiệp đã và đang hoạt động sản xuất kinh doanh, thì cũng vào thời điểm này năm 2005 là 113.352 doanh nghiệp, bình quân mỗi năm trong 5 năm tăng trên 14 nghìn doanh nghiệp thực tế có hoạt động. Tính đến nay tổng số doanh nghiệp đã đạt khoảng 230 nghìn doanh nghiệp. Số doanh nghiệp ngày một tăng có sự góp mặt của nhiều thành phần kinh tế, đặc biệt khu vực doanh nghiệp ngoài nhà nước và doanh nghiệp có vốn nước ngoài. Không chỉ tăng nhanh về số doanh nghiệp, quan trọng hơn là tăng cả về quy mô doanh nghiệp (về lao động, vốn…), những yếu tố này cùng với các yếu tốq, về công nghệ,…góp phần quan trọng để tăng nhanh hơn giá trị gia tăng cho toàn nền kinh tế quốc dân.
