Năm 2013, cả nước đã xuất khẩu gần 6,6 triệu tấn gạo, giảm hơn 1,4 triệu tấn (tức giảm 17,76%) so với năm 2012, kim ngạch đạt gần 2,93 tỷ USD, giảm 20,36%, đây là mức xuất khẩu thấp nhất trong 3 năm qua. Với kết quả này, Việt Nam đã giảm xuống xếp thứ 3 sau Ấn Độ và Thái Lan trên bảng tổng xếp xuất khẩu gạo không đáp ứng được mục tiêu xuất khẩu gạo đã đề ra 7,5 triệu tấn hồi đầu năm 2013; xuất khẩu gạo Việt Nam sụt giảm là do áp lực cạnh tranh cao và sụt giảm nhu cầu của các thị trường truyền thống như Malaysia, Philippines và Indonesia.
