Phải nhận được sự đồng ý tham gia tích cực vào nghiên cứu của tất cả những người tham gia. Thông thường người tham gia nghiên cứu sẽ ký vào một bản chấp thuận (consent form) trong đó nêu rõ đồng ý tham gia nghiên cứu gì, vì mục đích gì, đã được giải thích rõ tất cả những thông tin liên quan tới nghiên cứu.
