Những cách làm du lịch chưa chuyên nghiệp, chưa được đầu tư đồng bộ là thực trạng của phát triển du lịch hiện nay, điều này đã và đang hạn chế số lượng du khách đến với Lào Cai. Khó khăn, hạn chế trong hoạt động du lịch không chỉ ảnh hưởng trực tiếp đến các chỉ tiêu cơ bản của du lịch như: lượng khách du lịch quốc tế, tổng doanh thu từ du lịch, việc làm, hoạt động kinh doanh của hệ thống doanh nghiệp du lịch,... mà còn ảnh hưởng gián tiếp đến việc thu hút đầu tư, hiệu quả xúc tiến, quảng bá du lịch, tính chuyên nghiệp và khả năng cạnh tranh trong lĩnh vực du lịch của Lào Cai.
