Và tôi bắt đầu bị…đói!
Thật không thể tin được rằng tôi bị đói ngay trong lòng nước Mỹ, một quốc gia mà bất cứ một người Việt Nam nào khi nghĩ đến đều hình dung đó là một quốc gia giàu có văn minh.
Đúng, nước Mỹ có những chương trình hổ trợ thực phẩm, giúp đỡ người già, neo đơn, phụ nữ một mình nuôi con và trẻ em là mối quan tâm hàng đầu tại quốc gia nhân đạo này nhưng rất tiếc: Tôi không nằm trong diện nào để được trợ cấp!
Là một người chưa được cấp quy chế tỵ nạn tôi chỉ được xem là một người nước ngoài tạm cư tại đây, tôi cũng không phải là một người đến Mỹ theo diện bảo lãnh chính thức, tôi đến bằng thị thực du lịch và xin tỵ nạn do đó tôi không có tên trong các chương trình được chính phủ trợ cấp, tôi phải sống bằng chính sức lao động của mình và một lối thoát duy nhất là phải đi làm có đóng thuế để nếu lỡ chẳng may thất nghiệp thì sẽ được ngân quỹ của tiểu bang giúp đỡ trong một thời gian tìm việc mới.
Tôi đã đi xin việc nhiều nơi, có hôm tôi đến trung tâm tìm việc mà ở Việt Nam gọi là cò lao động điền đơn, sau đó phải đi phỏng vấn tại thành phố Irvine cách xa nơi tôi ở bằng quảng đường Sài Gòn đến Long Thành nhưng cuối cùng tôi đã bỏ cuộc vì với mức lương cơ bản tối thiểu tôi nghĩ chiếc xe mình sẽ mau chóng bị hư trước khi mình có tiền mua xe mới!
