Các thành phố đồn trúc được xây dựng ở châu Âu được thiết kế theo nguyên tắc quy hoạch của La Mã. Mặt bằng của thành phố là hình chữ nhật hoặc hình vuông, xung quanh có tường thành bảo vệ. Mạng lưới đường phố được tổ chức theo dạng ô bàn cờ đều đặn với hai trục chính. Các công trình công cộng quan trọng như đền thờ, nhà họp, toà án, cửa hàng, nhà hát, đấu trường, nhà tắm công công,… tập trung xung quanh forum và tạo nên trung tâm sinh hoạt công cộng.
