Trên thế giới, việc các doanh nhân giành một phần tài sản của mình đóng góp cho các hoạt động từ thiện đã trở nên quen thuộc. Những doanh nhân như: Andrew Carnegie, Rockefeller, Warren Buffet và đặc biệt là Bill Gates được nhắc đến không chỉ thành công trên thương trường mà còn vì những tấm lòng vàng. Bên cạnh việc xem làm từ thiện là nghĩa vụ đối với xã hội, các doanh nghiệp cũng sớm nhận ra giá trị của nó trong việc marketing. Vì thế, tham gia hoạt động từ thiện như một công cụ làm thương hiệu đang trở nên phổ biến trên thế giới, đặc biệt là phương Tây.
Ở Việt Nam, việc làm từ thiện của doanh nhân ngày nay cũng đã có nhiều chuyển biến tích cực. Các doanh nghiệp của chúng ta ngày càng quan tâm đền vấn đề này. Họ đã gắn lợi ích bản thân với việc chia sẻ cùng cộng đồng.
CSR được giới thiệu vào nước ta thông qua hoạt động của các công ty đa quốc gia tại Việt Nam. Các công ty này thường xây dựng các bộ quy tắc và các chuẩn mực đạo đức và đạo đức kinh doanh có tính chất phổ quát để có thể áp dụng ở nhiều khu vực thị trường khác nhau.
