Thương mại công bằng - Fair Trade là một quan hệ đối tác kinh doanh, dựa trên đối thoại , minh bạch và tôn trọng, tìm sự bình đẳng hơn trong thương mại quốc tế thông thường. Nó góp phần vào sự phát triển bền vững bằng cách cung cấp điều kiện kinh doanh tốt hơn, và việc đảm bảo các quyền của nhà sản xuất và người lao động bị thiệt thòi. Một ví dụ căn bản về khu vực bị ảnh hưởng bất lợi khi không còn sự bảo hộ của nhà nước là ở các làng nghề trên khắp Đông Nam Á. Các hộ gia đình phải cạnh tranh để làm thêm các sản phẩm thủ công mỹ nghệ trong khi phải chấp nhận mức lương ngày càng thấp đi, nguyên nhân bởi vì họ đang cạnh tranh với nhau thay vì làm việc cùng nhau. Xu hướng này dẫn tới sự bần cùng hóa của toàn bộ cộng đồng làm nghề thủ công – vốn là truyền thống văn hóa quý báu của các nước như Việt Nam hay Thái Lan.
